Customer Reviews about T Drake McDonald, MD

  • I have been through a few neurologists, but Dr. McDonald really stands out to me. He is compassionate and interested in the problems that I have had and is always helpful. I live in Denver, but I drive to Colorado Springs because I don't want to lose him as my doctor !!

Wasted the last 2 years of my life seeing Dr McDonald; taking medications that didn't relieve my symptoms. He told my insurance provider he thought my tremors were in my head -- even though he has had me on medical leave for 2 years from my employer and kept shoving pills at me. I was denied Long Term Disability based on his sole opinion. This doctor has literally never spent more than 5 - 10 minutes with me at a time, and has never had a real conversation with me -- until he found out he was my neighbor. Only then, at our final appointment, did he spend an additional 5 minutes speaking to me -- most of which was him talking at me while he reviewed notes from a neurologist I was seeing for a second opinion. I was also receiving Botox injection from Dr McDonald for severe and persistent migraines. I had expressed that the injections weren't as effective as they were initially. I stated that I was having muscle weakness in my shoulder, causing me a lot of pain. The occupational therapist that Dr McDonald sent me to was alarmed at the muscle loss in the right side of my neck and shoulder. I was also having trouble swallowing; causing me to choke on food and beverages. My Adam's apple has drifted noticeably to the left. Dr. McDonald seemed to ignore my issue, preoccupied with rereading over his notes during the 5 - 10 minutes I would spend with him. Every visit I had with Dr McDonald seemed like he was meeting me for the first time (even after 2 years). He would never be familiar with me when he walked into the room and would spend all the time with me re-reading his notes to become familiar. It was only after he walked directly past my house with his dog that I made a point to say hi to him. Finding out he was my neighbor made him remember me finally on our last visit. He never addressed my issues with the Botox. It appeared he never heard my complaints. Instead he kept ordering the injections -- which I am now refusing. I have cancelled all future appointments with his office The occupational therapist and the physical therapist that he sent me to, as well as a psycho-therapist, two psychiatrists, and my family doctor all told me to get a second opinion. My family doctor was so adamant about sending me for a second opinion that he sent in a referral for a neurologist in Denver. The occupational therapist was having trouble discussing my issues with Dr McDonald and stated his office wouldn't respond to their communications. Dr McDonald never made a point to reference any of the notes from the therapists. My initial visit with the other neurologist for a second opinions was over 2 and a half hours long. Every additional visit I have had with the other neurologist has been no less than a hour. I have received an extensive amount of additional tests from the second neurologist. After following up for a second opinion, I am now being treated for early onset Parkinson's by the second neurologist (specializing in movement disorders). The second neurologist ordered a follow up with an endocrinologist after receiving additional testing and further discovery. After which, a treatment plan was made for me. In addition, I will point out that Dr McDonald's staff is constantly changing. Which can be unsettling or confusing for patients with cognitive difficulties. Appointments are not easy to schedule and the scheduling of appointments may be required to be months out. I will not see Dr McDonald again. Nor would I recommend anyone to him.
